The 13 IGRA Rodeo Events, Explained for First-Timers
Gay rodeo has everything you'd see at any rodeo, plus a few events you won't find anywhere else. The International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA) sanctions 13 events in four groups. Here's a quick tour for anyone thinking about entering, or just trying to follow along from the stands.
For the official rules of each event, always go to IGRA's event descriptions and the IGRA rulebook. This guide is the friendly overview.
Rough stock
Rough stock events pit you against a bucking or strong animal. They're the most physical events at the rodeo.
- Bull riding: stay on a bucking bull for eight seconds, holding on with one hand. Judges score the ride.
- Ranch saddle bronc riding: the same idea on a bucking horse, ridden in a ranch saddle, and judged.
- Steer riding: a bucking steer instead of a bull. It's where a lot of rough stock riders start.
- Chute dogging: a timed event on foot. You start in the chute with a steer, bring it out into the arena, and wrestle it to the ground. Technique beats size.
Roping
- Calf roping on foot: rope a calf while standing on the ground. A great first roping event, since you don't need your own horse.
- Mounted breakaway roping: rope a calf from horseback. The rope is tied so it breaks away from the saddle when the calf hits the end of it, stopping the clock.
- Team roping: two riders work one steer. The header ropes the horns, and the heeler ropes the hind legs.
Speed
Speed events are horse-and-rider races against the clock through a set pattern. Knocking over equipment or going off pattern costs you.
- Barrel racing: a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels.
- Pole bending: weave through a line of poles and back.
- Flag racing: a race pattern built around moving a flag at a barrel, against the clock.
Camp events
Camp events are where gay rodeo is truly its own thing. They're team events, they're timed, and they're usually the loudest part of the weekend.
- Steer decorating: a team of two works a steer while one teammate ties a ribbon on its tail.
- Wild drag race: a team of three, one in drag, gets a steer across a line and the teammate in drag rides it back across.
- Goat dressing: a team of two races to get a pair of underwear onto a goat.
Picking your first event
- No horse? No problem. Calf roping on foot, chute dogging and the camp events don't require one.
- Start at a rodeo school. IGRA member associations run schools where you can try events with experienced instructors, safety gear and calm stock.
- Grab a partner for camp events. They're the fastest way to make friends on the circuit.
Iron Reef teaches all 13 events, and chute dogging instruction comes from the 2025 IGRA World Champion Chute Dogger. See rodeo school and coaching, or check the 2027 IGRA season calendar to plan your first rodeo.
